The first thing Kael heard after dying was laughter.
Not human laughter.
It came from somewhere above the clouds, deep and ancient, like an entire army of gods had gathered just to watch one pathetic man suffer.
Then a voice spoke.
“Candidate rejected.”
Kael looked around.
There was no ground beneath his feet.
No sky above him.
Only an endless white space filled with thousands of glowing doors.
And standing beyond those doors were figures that looked less like people and more like living stars.
Warriors.
Mages.
Saints.
Kings.
Monsters.
Every one of them was being chosen.
One after another, golden chains descended from the heavens and wrapped themselves around the candidates.
“Divine Flame chosen.”
A young woman immediately burst into flames.
“Sword God’s Blessing chosen.”
A boy who had never held a sword suddenly received a divine blade.
“Eye of the All-Seeing God chosen.”
Another candidate opened his eyes and saw through the entire dimension.
Then Kael stepped forward.
He expected the same miracle.
Instead, every golden light disappeared.
The gods went silent.
And the largest door in the entire dimension slammed shut.
A final message appeared in front of him.
[You possess no divine compatibility.]
[You possess no legendary talent.]
[You possess no heroic destiny.]
[You have been rejected by every known god.]
Kael stared at the words.
Then he smiled.
Because there was one thing the gods had forgotten to check.
Whether he was willing to accept their rejection.
He raised his middle finger toward the heavens.
“Good.”
The gods froze.
Kael looked up at them.
“Because I wasn't planning on worshipping you anyway.”
For the first time in thousands of years, the gods felt something they had never expected to feel from a human.
Fear.
Because the moment Kael was rejected by every god...
something else answered his call.
A black notification appeared in the empty white space.
Not gold.
Not holy.
Not divine.
Black.
And underneath it were six words.
[Congratulations, Unchosen One.]
[You have unlocked the Forbidden Path.]
That should have been impossible.
The gods had spent thousands of years deciding who deserved power.
They had built entire religions around the idea that strength came from divine selection.
But they had made one mistake.
They assumed rejection meant weakness.
They were about to discover that rejection could create something much more dangerous.
