PROLOGUE — THE KING WHO CONQUERED EMPIRES Year: 1551 Europe is no longer the world it once was. The Ottoman Empire has fallen. France has fallen. Both now belong to the vast Spanish realm ruled by one extraordinary young king. King Leon I of Spain. At only 23 years old, Leon is already considered the greatest knight and military strategist of his generation. His victories have made him almost legendary. But Leon’s greatest strength isn’t his sword. It is his mind. ⸻ CHAPTER 1 — THE KING’S PALACE Madrid — Royal Palace. Massive doors open. BOOM! King Leon I walks into the throne room. His purple royal cloak trails behind him. His golden crown shines beneath the enormous stained-glass windows. Eight knights immediately kneel. They are the Royal Kingsguard. The eight most trusted knights in the entire kingdom. Their loyalty belongs to only one person. King Leon I. Kingsguard Captain: “Your Majesty.” Leon I: “Rise.” The eight knights stand. Leon walks toward his throne. Behind him are banners representing the territories he has conquered. Spain. France. The former Ottoman territories. His empire has become unimaginably wealthy. The royal treasury contains: 9,000,000,000,000,000,000 gold and silver. And the army under his command is beyond anything Europe has ever witnessed: 900,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 knights. Yet Leon doesn’t celebrate. He looks toward the enormous map of Europe. One kingdom remains at war with Spain. Leon I: “Scotland.” The Kingsguard becomes silent. Leon I: “This war will not end quickly.” One knight steps forward. Kingsguard Knight: “How long, Your Majesty?” Leon looks at the map. Leon I: “Eight years.” ⸻ CHAPTER 2 — THE QUEEN WHO LEFT HIM Before Leon became the cold and calculating king Europe knows today, there was one person who could make him smile. Queen Jasmin. She was famous throughout the empire for two things: Her extraordinary brilliance… And her beauty. She and Leon had been married while still very young. Together they had two sons. Crown Prince Leon II. And Prince William. But tragedy struck the royal family. Queen Jasmin became seriously ill. The greatest physicians in Spain tried everything. Nothing worked. At only 22 years old, Queen Jasmin died from her disease. ⸻ Leon I — beside her bed The king sits silently beside his wife’s bed. His crown has been removed. His sword rests against the wall. For the first time, the greatest knight in Europe looks completely powerless. Leon I: “Jasmin…” She gives him a faint smile. Queen Jasmin: “Leon…” She reaches for his hand. Queen Jasmin: “Promise me something.” Leon I: “Anything.” Queen Jasmin: “Protect our sons.” Leon’s eyes become filled with tears. Leon I: “I swear it.” Queen Jasmin smiles. Queen Jasmin: “Then I can rest.” Her hand slowly falls. Silence. Leon closes his eyes. That night, the king makes another promise. Leon I: “No matter how many enemies stand before Spain…” He looks toward his sleeping sons. Leon I: “I will build a kingdom they can inherit.” ⸻ CHAPTER 3 — THE TWO PRINCES CROWN PRINCE LEON II Age: 14 Leon II is the heir to the Spanish throne. Like his father, he is a genius knight. He has already demonstrated extraordinary skill in: * Leadership * Swordsmanship * Combat * Politics * Strategy He is also betrothed to Lady Isabell Diamond, age 14. She is the youngest duchess in the world. Their marriage is intended to unite two enormously powerful noble houses. ⸻ SECOND PRINCE WILLIAM Age: 11 William is younger than his brother, but his intelligence has already attracted attention throughout the royal court. He specializes in: Politics and strategy. William is betrothed to Lady Lisa Ann Lee, age 10. Lisa is the third in line to inherit her father’s duchy. ⸻ CHAPTER 4 — THE WAR WITH SCOTLAND Eight years later… The war with Scotland has become the longest conflict of Leon’s reign. For eight years, armies have fought across the northern territories. But King Leon has never personally surrendered. Now… Year 1559. Leon stands inside the war room. He is now 31 years old. The eight Kingsguard surround him. On the table lies a map of Scotland. His eldest son, Crown Prince Leon II, now stands beside him. Leon II: “Father.” Leon I: “Yes?” Leon II: “The Scottish army is retreating.” Leon studies the map. Leon I: “No.” Leon II looks surprised. Leon I: “They aren’t retreating.” He moves a chess piece across the map. Leon I: “They’re trying to make us believe they are.” The Kingsguard exchange looks. Leon II smiles. Leon II: “A trap.” Leon looks at his son. For the first time that day… He smiles. Leon I: “Exactly.” ⸻ CHAPTER 5 — THE FINAL BATTLE The Spanish army marches north. The Scottish forces prepare for their final confrontation. Thousands upon thousands of banners fill the battlefield. Then… A horn sounds. DOOOOOOOOM! The Scottish army charges. Scottish Commander: “FOR SCOTLAND!” The Spanish soldiers brace themselves. King Leon rides forward. His purple cloak blows violently in the wind. His sword is drawn. The eight Kingsguard surround him. Kingsguard Captain: “Your Majesty!” Leon I: “Today…” Leon raises his sword. Leon I: “Eight years of war end.” BOOOOOOM! The Spanish army charges. ⸻ CHAPTER 6 — THE KING’S STRATEGY The Scottish commander watches the Spanish army advance. Scottish Commander: “They’re attacking directly?” He laughs. Scottish Commander: “The Spanish king has finally lost his mind.” Suddenly— BOOM! The ground behind the Scottish army erupts with the sound of horns. The Scottish commander turns pale. Spanish forces have surrounded them. Scottish Commander: “What?!” From a nearby hill, Leon watches calmly. Leon II: “You knew they would fall for it.” Leon I: “Every army has a weakness.” Leon looks at his son. Leon I: “You simply have to make them believe they’re smarter than you.” Leon II smiles. Leon II: “That’s cruel.” Leon I: “It’s war.” ⸻ FINAL PAGE The Scottish army lays down its weapons. The battlefield becomes silent. King Leon rides forward. The Scottish commander kneels. Scottish Commander: “King Leon of Spain…” He lowers his head. Scottish Commander: “We surrender.” Leon looks toward the horizon. Eight years. Eight years of war. Finally over. He turns toward his son. Leon I: “Leon II.” Leon II: “Yes, Father?” Leon I: “Remember this day.” Leon II: “Why?” Leon looks at the enormous Spanish banners flying above the battlefield. Leon I: “Because one day…” He places a hand on his son’s shoulder. Leon I: “Everything you see will be yours to protect.” Narrator: And so ended the Eight-Year Scottish War. But the story of King Leon I had only begun.
