A portrait based off of this.
"You should have seen what happened in the cafeteria," began Cassie over the phone. "The dog ran through and the guy held on to the leash. He landed into someone's tray and a bowl of soup landed on this guy's white golf shirt."
Cassie laughed.
Seto was never one to smile, so no echos of laughter were in return on the other side of the line.
"That's quite a school you go to." He finally said.
"I signed up for law school, not clown college." She laughed some more.
She glanced down at her Key of Clow pendant. "Kero says hi."
"How did you manage to sneak him through customs." She could practically hear the eye roll in his voice.
"I see you're still dating sarcasm," she scoffed and laughed.
Some things never change, even if it had been almost a year since she left for law school in America.
A long silence came.
"You know how I feel about you, right?" She asked.
The air got tense.
Why else would they keep in touch while she was overseas for college. Maybe he felt the same way?
But this was Kaiba.
He always preferred solidarity.
If he didn't feel that way about her, he should just say it and let her move on with her life.
"Cassie... I know I made it hard for you, for both of us ever since we met." He began. "But ever since meeting you... I think that wall I built for so long is finally coming down."
That was great to hear, but it didn't quite ease her mind.
"I'm happy for you it's coming down, but it's not just about us," said Cassie. "It look years for Yugi to be your friend. It's you. You just can't make commitment."
Seto breathed. "Fine. I had that coming."
"How do I know you're worth the wait?"
"Keep talking on the phone, emailing..." This was the first time he ever stammered. "Look, I never cared for anyone like I care about you, okay. I'm a guy with issues, I know. But I also know is, I want you in my life, Cassie."
A long pause came.
His voice echoed over on the phone. "I need you."
Tears were in her eyes.
Knowing about his past, it was how he was the person that he was.
Who could blame him.
But she needed him, too.
"When I come home for the summer... do you wanna hang out?" She asked.
He swallowed. "I'd like that very much."
