Title- Happy ever after and other lies
In a world where people are born with the spirits of fairytales Bela and her younger brother Romak live in the sleepy village of Forests end.
Many in the village and outside it believe that Bela is a new princess spirit and that her brother ( a wolf spirit) could be a corrupting presence.
Prince Durmand plans to "save" Bela by whisking her away to the shining city of Brightholme.
Bela and Romak have other plans.
When Bela is "saved" by the prince. Romak gets the help of his friends and a group of abandoned princesses that were told they were too strange
Near the final stage of the story the wedding between Bela and Durmand happens and the Prince let's slip that he tried to get Romak killed. Furious Bela's spirit awakens not as a princess but as an evil queen (the wedding being the catalyst)
And dark vines begin to surround the castle and lift it towards the dark forest
Romak and the others arrive and Romak tries to calm his sister down. In the mayhem Durmand tries to strike down Romak only to get turned into a frog by Bela.
They manage to convince Bela to return the castle to its rightful place and Anastasia is finally allowed to claim her birthright.
Anastasia- once in line for the throne ,but after the revelation of her dragon spirit now lives in a tower in black forest
Humphrey- giant born, introverted. Naturally 12 feet tall but can grow to larger heights, has a crush on Anastasia.
Rena- fox spirit. Town gossip monger, childhood friend of Romak and Bela.
Meka - princess spirit that dresses in rags and talks to rats
Laura - princess spirit that has a collection of sentient pots, pans, brooms and buckets that follow her
Serena- princess spirit that sings so terribly that Windows crack and wood splinters
Grace - princess spirit who is large and can lift trees from their roots
Princess spirits lose their powers after marriage
Evil queen spirits only awaken after marriage
At the end of the story
Romak talks to Rena
"Can you help with Bela? Ever since she saw her first wrinkle she's been excitedly saying she's going to be a withered old crone who lives in the forest and has a house full of cats and chickens and throws rocks at nosy children, Rena she's cackling actually cackling"
Rena laughs "yeah that sounds right, but she'll probably make medicine for the sick and give cryptic warnings to travellers and give lost children bread and a bed for the night"
Romak - "yeah but also, its one wrinkle one. It's great that's she's happy, even if the village elder looks like he might combust every time she does something un-princessly"

The Princess They Decided On
Bela and Romak's ordinary day in Forest's End cracks open when a rumor of a prince asking about Bela turns real — a royal carriage arrives at the village gate, uninvited.

The Rescue Nobody Asked For
Prince Durmand steps out of the carriage and charms the whole village of Forest's End — then announces he's taking Bela to Brightholme tomorrow, and quietly tells Romak he isn't invited.

The Last Night in Forest's End
Bela and Romak get one last night on the mill rooftop before dawn takes her to Brightholme — and Rena brings word of princesses who said no and vanished rather than marry.

The Tower That Said No
Romak and Rena walk the black forest road to find the tower — and learn the vanished princesses were never taken. They left. Anastasia refuses to help, then tells Romak what a wedding actually costs a princess spirit.

Humphrey defies Anastasia and points Romak at the neighbours. Meka says yes in four seconds and brings rats that can map a palace. Laura says no — and tells them what marriage wakes.
