At the top of the canopy, looking out over the endless green ocean of the Congo, he let out a sound to test his new form. It wasn't a human cry—it was a guttural, earth-shaking roar that echoed for miles across the forest, making the birds scatter from the treetops.
He closed his eyes again, visualizing his human form, his family, and his purpose. The fur receded, his frame softened, and he landed softly back on his feet, human once more—but entirely changed. He had mastered the threshold.
