The air in the heart of the Democratic Republic of the Congo smelled of damp earth, sweet jasmine, and ancient rain. Five-year-old Kaelo loved the rainforest near his village, but today, chasing a iridescent blue butterfly, he had wandered far past the towering kapok trees he recognized. Shadows stretched long across the jungle floor as the canopy swallowed the last rays of sunlight.
Then came the low, rumbling growl.
Kaelo froze. Twigs snapped, and from the dense ferns emerged a leopard. It was magnificent and terrifying, its golden coat dappled with rosettes as dark as midnight. Its amber eyes locked onto Kaelo. The boy’s heart hammered against his ribs like a wild bird as the great cat crouched, muscles coiled, and leapt through the air straight toward him.
Kaelo squeezed his eyes shut, bracing for the impact.
Instead of heavy paws, a breeze smelling of fresh rain and crushed leaves rushed over him. The violent rustle of leaves vanished into a soft, shimmering silence. Kaelo opened one eye, then both.
Standing where the beast had landed was a girl, no older than twelve, her skin glowing like polished mahogany. She wore a woven skirt of emerald moss and vibrant orchid petals, and her eyes held the exact same glowing amber light of the big cat.
"Do not fear, little one," she said, her voice sounding like the gentle trickle of a forest stream. "I am the Spirit of the Lualaba."
Kaelo took a tiny step back, his voice a whisper. "You were... a big leopard."
"I take the form of the hunter to test the heart of the brave," she replied, stepping forward and kneeling until she was at eye level with him. She reached out, touching a gentle, warm palm to Kaelo’s forehead. "Many run from the forest, and many come to harm it. But you walk through it with wonder. I have watched you, Kaelo."
She reached into her palm and pressed a smooth, glowing river stone into his small hand.
"The rainforest is the heart of the Congo, and it is growing weary," the girl said softly, looking up at the canopy. "I choose you to be its protector. As you grow, this mark will give you the strength of the leopard, the wisdom of the ancient trees, and the courage to guard our people and our home."
Kaelo looked at the warm stone in his hand, then up into the guardian's eyes. The fear in his chest transformed into a steady, glowing warmth. Nodding bravely, he held the stone tight. With a warm smile, the girl stepped backward into the mist, her form blurring back into the golden silhouette of the leopard before bounding silently into the green, leaving Kaelo guided safely back toward the flickering lights of his home village.
