TREY KNOX: DEVIL'S SOUL Volume 1 — THE SOUL COLLECTOR Genre: Dark Fantasy • Supernatural • Samurai • Action • Horror Setting: Mississippi Protagonist: Trey Knox, 17 --- PROLOGUE THE NIGHT THE DEVIL CAME Mississippi, 2009. A storm covered the sky. Thunder shook the windows of a small house surrounded by woods. Inside, a baby cried. Trey Knox had just been born. His grandmother held him in her arms. Then every light in the house went out. The crying stopped. Trey opened his eyes. His grandmother froze. For a brief moment, his eyes were completely black. Then a tiny red flame appeared inside them. A voice whispered from somewhere inside the room. VOICE: "The vessel has been born." Trey's grandmother looked toward the darkness. GRANDMOTHER: "Not again." Lightning struck outside. For one second, a demonic samurai appeared in the window. Then it vanished. --- CHAPTER 1 SEVENTEEN YEARS LATER Trey Knox was seventeen. He lived in a small Mississippi town where everyone knew everyone. At school, Trey kept to himself. Black hoodie. Black jeans. Sneakers. A necklace from his grandfather around his neck. Nobody knew his secret. Nobody knew that Trey could see the dead. Every morning, spirits walked through the hallways. Some looked like normal people. Others looked like monsters. Trey pretended not to see them. Until one followed him home. --- CHAPTER 2 THE SPIRIT IN THE WOODS That night, Trey walked through the woods. He heard footsteps. He stopped. Nothing. He continued walking. Another step. Trey sighed. TREY: "You can come out now." A distorted figure crawled from behind a tree. Its body was covered in black smoke. SPIRIT: "Trey Knox." Trey reached behind his back. His hand grabbed the handle of a katana. TREY: "You know my name?" The spirit smiled. SPIRIT: "Your name is known in Hell." Trey drew the sword. The blade was completely black. Red symbols appeared along the steel. TREY: "Then Hell knows I'm coming." The spirit attacked. Trey vanished. A single slash cut through the darkness. The spirit fell apart. But its soul remained. Trey raised his hand. A black mark appeared on his palm. Chains came from his shadow. The soul was dragged into him. SOUL ACQUIRED. POWER INCREASED. Trey looked at his hand. TREY: "One." --- CHAPTER 3 THE SOUL COLLECTOR Trey discovered that every spirit carried a different power. Some gave him speed. Some gave him strength. Trey looked up. TREY: "See what?" Maya pointed behind him. A dead student was standing against the wall. Trey's expression changed. MAYA: "That." Trey looked back. The spirit disappeared. TREY: "How long?" MAYA: "My whole life." Trey stared at her. TREY: "You shouldn't have told me that." MAYA: "Why?" Trey looked toward the hallway. A shadow moved beneath the door. TREY: "Because now they know you can see them." --- CHAPTER 5 THE ATTACK The school suddenly went dark. Students screamed. Windows shattered. A giant spirit crawled through the ceiling. Trey stood up. Maya grabbed his arm. MAYA: "What are you doing?" Trey pulled his katana from beneath his jacket. TREY: "My job." MAYA: "You're seventeen!" Trey looked at her. TREY: "So are you." The spirit attacked. Trey blocked it. The force sent him through a classroom wall. He stood up. Blood ran down his face. His eyes turned red. Black markings appeared across his arm. DEVIL: "Let me handle this." Trey clenched his fist. TREY: "Stay out of it." --- CHAPTER 6 DEVIL SAMURAI The spirit attacked again. Trey raised his sword. Black flames erupted around him. His clothes transformed into dark samurai armor. A horn appeared above his right eyebrow. His sword became surrounded by red fire. Maya stared. MAYA: "Trey..." Trey looked at the spirit. TREY: "Run." The spirit laughed. SPIRIT: "You think you're frightening?" Trey disappeared. BLACK SAMURAI ART: FIRST FORM DEVIL'S MOON One slash. The spirit split apart. Its soul screamed. Trey captured it. SOUL COUNT: 2 Then Trey collapsed. --- CHAPTER 7 THE DEVIL'S VOICE Trey woke in his bedroom. His grandfather's sword rested beside him. The Devil spoke inside his mind. DEVIL: "You enjoyed that." TREY: "No." DEVIL: "You're lying." Trey looked into the mirror. His reflection smiled. Trey wasn't smiling. TREY: "Get out of my head." The reflection whispered: DEVIL: "You can't kill what's already inside you." --- CHAPTER 8 GRANDPA'S SECRET Trey found an old box hidden beneath the floor. Inside was a photograph of his grandfather wearing samurai armor. Beside him stood several spirit hunters. On the back of the photograph was a message. "If Trey ever awakens, tell him the truth." Trey opened another letter. His grandfather had written: "Our family has guarded a forbidden power for generations. The Devil chose our bloodline. Every generation produces one vessel. You are the strongest one yet. Don't let the Devil control you. Use the power. Never become the power." Trey dropped the letter. TREY: "Grandpa knew." --- CHAPTER 9 THE FIRST HUNT Trey and Maya began hunting spirits together. They traveled across Mississippi. Abandoned churches. Old houses. Cemeteries. Forests. Bridges. Everywhere they went, spirits followed. Trey became stronger. SOUL COUNT: 10 Then: SOUL COUNT: 25 Then: SOUL COUNT: 50 But Trey noticed something. Every time he collected a soul, the Devil's voice became louder. --- CHAPTER 10 THE BLACK SAMURAI One night, Trey encountered another samurai. The warrior wore ancient armor. His face was hidden beneath a mask. SAMURAI: "Trey Knox." Trey drew his sword. TREY: "Who are you?" The samurai drew his blade. SAMURAI: "Your executioner." They clashed. Steel struck steel. Trey was thrown backward. The samurai was unbelievably fast. TREY: "You're not a spirit." SAMURAI: "No." He removed his mask. His face was covered with scars. SAMURAI: "I'm what happens when a Soul Collector loses control." --- CHAPTER 11 KAI The warrior introduced himself as Kai. He had once been a human soul hunter. He had collected too many souls. The Devil consumed him. Now Kai wandered between the human world and the Spirit Realm. KAI: "You think those souls are making you stronger." TREY: "They are." KAI: "They're making the Devil stronger." Trey attacked. Kai blocked. KAI: "You're going to become me." Trey's eyes flashed red. TREY: "Not a chance." --- CHAPTER 12 THE SOUL KING Deep beneath the earth, an ancient throne awakened. A giant samurai opened his eyes. His name was Ryujin. The Soul King. Thousands of spirits bowed before him. RYUJIN: "The vessel has collected enough." A spirit asked: SPIRIT: "Should we kill him?" Ryujin smiled. RYUJIN: "No." He stood. RYUJIN: "Bring him to me." --- CHAPTER 13 MISSISSIPPI FALLS The sky turned red. Spirits poured into Trey’s town. Cars crashed. Buildings shook. People ran through the streets. Maya looked at Trey. MAYA: "There are thousands." Trey unsheathed his sword. TREY: "Then I'll need a bigger sword." Maya laughed nervously. MAYA: "That wasn't funny." Trey smiled. TREY: "I wasn't joking." --- CHAPTER 14 SOUL WAR Trey fought through the streets. One spirit. Five. Twenty. Fifty. His soul count climbed. 100. His Devil markings spread farther. 200. His horns became larger. 300. His eyes became completely red. Maya screamed: MAYA: "TREY! STOP!" Trey didn't hear her. The Devil had begun taking control. DEVIL: "More." TREY: "No..." DEVIL: "MORE!" Trey raised his sword. Hundreds of spirits surrounded him. --- CHAPTER 15 666 Trey collected the final soul. SOUL COUNT: 666 The entire world became silent. Trey's heart stopped. Then— BOOM. It started beating again. Black flames exploded from his body. His armor changed. Two massive horns appeared. His sword transformed into a giant black blade. The Devil finally emerged. Not completely. But enough. DEVIL: "Thank you." Trey fell to one knee. TREY: "What did I do?" The Devil smiled through Trey. DEVIL: "You opened the door." --- CHAPTER 16 THE SPIRIT REALM Trey was pulled into another dimension. Maya grabbed his hand. She was pulled in with him. They landed in a massive world filled with floating islands, ruined temples, giant skeletons, and rivers of blue fire. Maya looked around. MAYA: "Where are we?" Trey stood. TREY: "The Spirit Realm." A voice echoed across the mountains. RYUJIN: "Welcome." The Soul King appeared. --- CHAPTER 17 THE TRUTH Ryujin revealed the truth. The Devil wasn't Trey’s enemy. It was the weapon his ancestors had created. They had created a demon powerful enough to destroy the Soul King. But the Devil eventually became uncontrollable. Trey's ancestors sealed it inside their bloodline. Ryujin wanted Trey because Trey was the first vessel powerful enough to control the Devil. RYUJIN: "You are not its prisoner." Trey stared. RYUJIN: "You are its king." --- CHAPTER 18 TREY VS. RYUJIN Ryujin attacked. Trey blocked. The impact shattered the ground. Trey activated his Devil armor. TREY: "BLACK SAMURAI..." His sword erupted with flames. TREY: "...SECOND FORM!" DEMON'S WRATH Trey attacked with a barrage of strikes. Ryujin blocked every one. Finally, Ryujin punched Trey through a mountain. Trey stood up.
