Black man The golden light faded from his eyes, but the world remained impossibly sharp. Kaelo stood in the damp twilight, his chest heaving as the raw power of the leopard surged beneath his skin. He needed to understand this force before he could face the men who had destroyed his home.
He closed his eyes and forced his ragged breathing to slow. Beneath his ribs, the ancient stone pulsed like a second heart. He reached inward with his mind, grasping for the wild, feral warmth waiting inside him.
The reaction was instantaneous and agonizingly electric.
His bone structure shifted with the sound of snapping branches. Kaelo dropped to his hands and knees as his fingernails lengthened into obsidian claws, digging deep into the mossy soil. Coarse, golden-silver fur burst through his skin, rippling down his spine and across his limbs. His jaw lengthened, his teeth sharpening into deadly fangs, and his spine extended into a powerful, twitching tail.
When he opened his eyes, he was pressed low to the earth. The scents of the rainforest hit him with overwhelming force—he could smell the resin of pine trees three miles away, the wet fur of a sleeping tapir, and the metallic tang of his own sweat. He flexed his forepaws, feeling five hundred pounds of pure, dense muscle coiled and ready to explode.
He leaped.
The movement was effortless. Kaelo launched thirty feet into the air, catching the thick branch of a giant mahogany tree. The claws locked effortlessly into the bark. He scaled the vertical trunk in seconds, moving with a silent, fluid speed that defied gravity.
At the top of the canopy, looking out over the endless green ocean of the Congo, he let out a sound to test his new form. It wasn't a human cry—it was a guttural, earth-shaking roar that echoed for miles across the forest, making the birds scatter from the treetops.
He closed his eyes again, visualizing his human form, his family, and his purpose. The fur receded, his frame softened, and he landed softly back on his feet, human once more—but entirely changed. He had mastered the threshold.
