Toma Akizuki drives for a dying team in a sport that no longer needs drivers: since the switch to predictive assist, every car computes the optimal line four corners ahead, and the winner is decided by whoever's model is best funded. Toma is the last man in the paddock who still runs his car raw, and he loses every weekend, cheerfully. Then a rookie on the championship team hits a wall at Suzuka on a corner the model said was clean — and Toma is the only driver on the grid who saw it happen with his own eyes instead of through a projected overlay. The models have started agreeing with each other about things that aren't there. Seventeen cars are being driven by a consensus that is quietly, elegantly wrong, and the only way to prove it is to keep finishing last until someone dies in a way that can't be filed.
