The true story of Cathay Williams, born enslaved in Missouri, freed as "contraband" in 1861, who spent years as an Army washerwoman trailing the Union infantry — and in 1866 enlisted as a soldier under the name "William Cathay," becoming the only documented woman to serve in the US Army disguised as a man during the Indian Wars, and the only known female Buffalo Soldier.
