BROKEN BLADES: LAST PROMISE Manga Series Description Genre: Action • Fantasy • Shonen • Adventure • Mystery • Drama Main Themes: Promises, memory, sacrifice, friendship, ambition, responsibility, and what it means to protect someone. ⸻ THE WORLD In this world, Veyra is the source of all life. It flows through every living thing, but its strength is never equal. Veyra is a spiritual force created through a person’s will, memories, emotions, and promises. Everyone possesses Veyra, but only some people awaken the ability to shape it into something extraordinary. Those who awaken are called Vowbound. A Vowbound doesn’t simply receive a superpower. Their ability is created through a Vow, a genuine promise that reflects who they are. The fundamental law of Veyra is: “Power gained through a Vow must be paid for with something of equal value.” Every Vow has a condition, restriction, drawback, and consequence. The stronger the promise, the greater the power. But the greater the power, the greater the price. Breaking a Vow causes Backlash, which can damage a person’s Veyra permanently. Those who completely lose themselves to broken Vows can become something known as a Broken. ⸻ VEYRA AWAKENING A person can awaken their Veyra ability when their will becomes stronger than their fear. The awakening doesn’t happen simply because someone wants power. Veyra responds to a person’s true choice. When someone awakens, their Veyra Mark appears on their body and their unique Veyra weapon manifests directly in front of them. The weapon is born from their Veyra. The newly awakened Vowbound reaches out and takes it. Afterward, they can summon their weapon whenever necessary and dismiss it back into their Veyra. This becomes one of the defining visual elements of the series. ⸻ VEYRA ABILITY TYPES Veyra abilities generally fall into several categories: Edge Abilities involving weapons, physical enhancement, cutting, striking, or offensive Veyra manipulation. Veil Movement, defense, perception, barriers, stealth, and battlefield manipulation. Bloom Manipulation or creation of living and spiritual matter. Echo Memories, emotions, experiences, and traces left behind by people or events. Null Extremely rare abilities capable of interfering with or canceling other Veyra abilities. A person can potentially awaken more than one Vow. * Unbound: Has Veyra but never awakens an ability. * Vowbound: Has awakened one Vow. * Dual-Bound: Has awakened two Vows. * Tri-Bound: Has awakened three Vows. Tri-Bound Vowbound are extraordinarily rare. ⸻ RANKS Vowbound are classified by their overall threat and ability. * F-Rank: Spark * E-Rank: Initiate * D-Rank: Vowbearer * C-Rank: Oathbound * B-Rank: High Vow * A-Rank: Crowned * S-Rank: Sovereign Above S-Rank is a special classification: WORLD BREAKER A World Breaker isn’t automatically the strongest person alive. The classification means their Veyra has the potential to affect the world on an extraordinary scale. World Breakers can potentially reshape enormous environments, destroy or alter massive systems, or fundamentally change how Veyra interacts with the world. But World Breaker power comes with enormous consequences. Possible costs include: * Permanent Veyra damage * Loss of memories * Loss of emotional connections * Loss of abilities * Environmental destruction * Physical collapse * Death ⸻ THE MAIN CHARACTER KAEL VIREN Age: 11 at the beginning Final Main-Series Age: 19 Race: Black Weapon: Silver-and-red katana Rank: Eventually World Breaker potential Status: Tri-Bound Kael is a stubborn, energetic, competitive boy who desperately wants to become stronger. At the beginning of the story, however, his Veyra is dormant. He trains under Master Renji, attempting to learn swordsmanship even though he hasn’t awakened an ability. Kael constantly loses. And he keeps getting back up. His biggest defining trait isn’t that he’s naturally the strongest. It’s that he refuses to stay down. ⸻ KAEL’S VOWS 1. Shadowstep Kael’s first movement ability. He can travel through shadows to dodge, reposition, and attack from unexpected angles. Repeated use places strain on his senses and nervous system. Shadowstep becomes the foundation of Kael’s fighting style. ⸻ 2. Thornbound Promise Kael’s primary Vow. His Veyra manifests as roses and thorns, but the deeper power isn’t simply controlling plants. Kael’s genuine promises can become temporary Veyra Laws. When Kael makes a promise that he truly means, his Veyra interprets the promise as a condition and creates a mechanism capable of enforcing it. Roses and thorns physically represent those promises. For example, instead of simply saying: “I won’t let you escape.” Kael’s Veyra can turn that promise into a condition that restricts the target’s escape. But Kael cannot create arbitrary reality-changing rules. The ability must follow the meaning of the promise. The larger the promise, the greater the Promise Debt. If Kael fulfills the promise, the debt is cleared. If he breaks it, Backlash occurs. ⸻ 3. Memory Thorns Kael’s hidden third Vow. This ability connects to Echo. Kael can interact with memories and traces left behind by people and events. He can: * Sense memory traces * See fragments of memories * Recall information he shouldn’t know * Temporarily manifest small pieces of memories * Use memories as part of his Veyra abilities The strange part is that Kael initially doesn’t understand that he has this ability. His Vow hides itself from him. Eventually, another Echo user realizes what Kael truly is: Tri-Bound. ⸻ KAEL’S MOVEMENT EVOLUTION Kael’s movement develops throughout the series: Shadowstep → Lightstep → Eclipse Step → World Walk Shadowstep allows him to travel through darkness. Lightstep eventually allows him to travel through sources of light. When he learns to combine the two, he develops: Eclipse Step Kael can transition between light and shadow during combat, making his movements extremely difficult to predict. At his highest level, World Walk allows the shadows and light within Thornrealm to function as part of his movement network. ⸻ KAEL’S FINAL POWER THORNREALM Kael eventually reaches his World Breaker state. His three Vows converge. Instead of simply creating attacks, Kael can transform the surrounding environment into a massive manifestation of his Veyra. The battlefield becomes a living realm of: * Roses * Thorns * Shadows * Memories * Veyra pathways * Promise Laws Kael becomes the living center of the realm. His greatest technique is: Last Promise: Rose of the End Kael condenses Thornrealm into one enormous rose. Its power can restore an environment or people within its domain to a previous state. But the price is devastating. Kael loses an important memory connected to someone he loved. He may know that person existed. He may know they mattered. But he can no longer remember who they were. This represents the ultimate conflict of Kael’s story: How much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice to keep your promises? ⸻ AYAME KISARAGI Age: 11 at the beginning Final Age: 18–19 Race: White Rank: A → S Weapon: Moonthread Bowstaff Vow: Moonthread Ayame is Renji’s first student. Unlike Kael, she awakens her Veyra early. She’s a prodigy with exceptional instincts and control. Ayame is: * Fiery * Fearless * Passionate * Competitive * Disciplined * Outspoken * Determined She is initially more skilled than Kael because she trained with Renji first and understands Veyra better. Her Veyra Mark is a silver-white crescent moon located between her shoulder blades. When she awakens, her glowing white Moonthread Bowstaff manifests in front of her. She reaches out and takes it. Her Vow allows her to create Veyra threads connected to her weapon and surroundings. She can use them to: * Bind enemies * Redirect attacks * Pull herself toward locations * Create defensive formations * Set traps * Manipulate battlefield positioning The more threads she controls, the more physically exhausted she becomes. ⸻ THE CHILDHOOD TRIO At the beginning of the story, Kael, Ayame, and Renji train together. Kael is the stubborn student who hasn’t awakened. Ayame is the prodigy who awakened first. Renji is the master who understands far more about Veyra than he tells them. Their early training scenes provide the lighter, character-driven foundation of the story. Kael repeatedly fails. Ayame constantly challenges him. Renji calmly watches them develop. The audience slowly becomes attached to their relationship. Then everything changes. ⸻ MASTER RENJI Age: Around 30 at the beginning Role: Mentor Former Position: Aegis Captain True Status: Hidden World Breaker Renji is a calm, disciplined, highly experienced swordsman with a dry sense of humor. He teaches Kael one fundamental principle: “Never let the enemy control the battle.” Renji specializes in controlling where an opponent can move. His Vow, Battlefield, allows him to create invisible zones and boundaries that influence movement and positioning. But Renji is hiding something. He is far more powerful than he appears. Publicly, Renji is believed to be an A-Rank Vowbound. In reality, he is a World Breaker who deliberately suppresses his power. He hides his true identity because he doesn’t want the world to know what he is capable of. ⸻ THE VANISHING One of the most important events in Volume 1 happens when Kael and Ayame witness Renji being attacked. The attackers are mysterious hooded figures connected to the Hollow Crown. Their identities are not revealed. Kael and Ayame try to help. They aren’t strong enough. Renji is captured. The attackers don’t kill him because they recognize that he’s a serious threat. One of them becomes interested in Kael and Ayame. She watches them and essentially decides: “Let’s see how strong you become.” Kael believes Renji has died. That mom
