Rosemead Panther: The Freshman Who Plays Every Position Manga et BD IA
“One Team. One Pride. One Freshman Who Somehow Does Everything.” Genre: Sports • School Life • Comedy • Romance • Drama • Coming-of-Age Setting: Rosemead, California Primary Sport: American Football SERIES PREMISE Brandon Vergas has just entered Rosemead High School. He's intelligent. He's athletic. He's confident. He's sarcastic when he wants to be. And, despite being a freshman, he has an almost ridiculous understanding of football. During freshman tryouts, Brandon demonstrates that he can play virtually anywhere. Wide Receiver. Half Back. Cornerback. Kick Returner. Rather than specialize in one position, Brandon becomes the team's ultimate utility player. The coaching staff eventually gives him an unexpected responsibility: FRESHMAN TEAM CAPTAIN. Unfortunately, Brandon soon discovers that being captain doesn't mean simply scoring touchdowns. His teammates have problems. One is being bullied. One is the bully. One is failing nearly every class. Another is dealing with problems at home. One desperately wants his father's approval. Another doesn't believe he's good enough to play. And somehow, Brandon keeps becoming the person everyone goes to. His solution? “We fix it.” But Brandon has problems of his own. He has a mountain of homework. Tests. Teachers. Upperclassmen. Bullies. Football practice. Girls. And an increasingly complicated crush on Valerie Brenas, one of the most beautiful cheerleaders at Rosemead High. There's just one problem. Valerie is dating an older Varsity football player. Meanwhile, Brandon's classmate Erika Hernandez has quietly developed a massive crush on him. Unfortunately for Erika... Brandon is completely oblivious. Enter Brandon's older cousin: ALAN VERGAS A sophomore on the Varsity football team. Conceited. Sarcastic. Smart. Annoyingly confident. And almost always right. Whenever Brandon faces a problem, Alan has advice. Brandon usually ignores it. Something goes wrong. Alan watches. Then says: ALAN: “I told you.” Eventually Brandon asks for help. Alan grins. ALAN: “If you want to make Varsity, you'll listen to me.” And somehow... Alan's advice works every single time. As the season progresses, Brandon's freshman team begins to transform from a collection of talented kids into a real football team. Then comes the impossible. The Panthers make the playoffs. They survive. They advance. And suddenly, Brandon's freshman season is heading toward the biggest football game of his young life: THE CIF CHAMPIONSHIP. MAIN CHARACTER BRANDON VERGAS Age: 14 Grade: Freshman Number: #7 Position: WR / HB / CB / KR Role: Freshman Team Captain Brandon is the protagonist of the series. He's naturally intelligent and possesses exceptional football instincts. He doesn't necessarily overpower everyone. Instead, he studies people. He studies formations. He studies tendencies. He notices weaknesses. He understands situations. And he adapts. His greatest ability isn't his speed. It isn't his strength. It's his ability to figure things out. Personality Brandon is: • Intelligent • Confident • Competitive • Charismatic • Funny • Flirty • Occasionally cocky • Surprisingly compassionate • Extremely analytical He loves talking trash on the football field. He also loves flirting with girls. Especially cheerleaders. Unfortunately, his confidence around girls sometimes disappears when he actually likes one. Which makes his relationship with Valerie particularly complicated. BRANDON'S FOOTBALL IDENTITY Brandon becomes known as: “The Panther Brain.” He studies opponents. He remembers formations. He recognizes defensive tendencies. He can switch positions without complaining. A typical Brandon game might look like: First Quarter: Wide Receiver Second Quarter: Half Back Third Quarter: Cornerback Fourth Quarter: Kick Returner Coach: “Brandon, where do you want to play?” Brandon: “Wherever you need me.” Coach: “You're fourteen.” Brandon: “And?” ALAN VERGAS Grade: Sophomore Team: Varsity Positions: WR / DB Relationship: Brandon's cousin Alan is one of the most important characters in the series. He's Brandon's mentor. And his biggest critic. Alan believes Brandon has enormous potential. But he also knows Brandon's biggest weakness: Brandon thinks being talented is enough. Alan teaches him that Varsity football requires: discipline. trust. consistency. patience. And sometimes... shutting up and listening. Alan's favorite line: “If you want to make Varsity, you'll listen to me.” Brandon: “You say that about everything.” Alan: “Because I'm right about everything.” Brandon: “You're not.” Alan: “Name one time.” Brandon pauses. “...I hate you.” Alan: “That's not an example.” THE ALAN GAG Throughout Season 1, Brandon repeatedly ignores Alan. Example: Alan: “Don't flirt with the cheerleaders before practice.” Brandon: “Why?” Alan: “Because you're going to get distracted.” Brandon: “I'll be fine.” Cut to Brandon walking onto the field. A cheerleader waves. Brandon waves back. He walks directly into a blocking sled. CRASH! Alan watches from the sideline. “Called it.” VALERIE BRENAS Grade: Freshman Activity: Cheerleading Brandon's Crush Valerie is confident, beautiful, outgoing and socially popular. Brandon immediately develops a crush on her. The problem? She's dating an older Varsity football player. ADRIAN Grade: Sophomore Team: Varsity Football Adrian isn't necessarily evil. He's simply older, stronger, more experienced and protective of Valerie. This creates tension between Brandon and Adrian. Brandon eventually learns an important lesson: Valerie isn't a prize to be won. She's a person. Brandon learns to respect her relationship rather than constantly trying to interfere. Valerie notices the change. And ironically... That's when she begins becoming more interested in Brandon. ERIKA HERNANDEZ Grade: Freshman Classmate: Brandon's friend Erika has secretly been in love with Brandon since the beginning of the school year. She knows everything about him. She knows his favorite snacks. She knows when he's nervous. She knows when he's pretending to understand homework. She knows exactly which classes he hates. She even knows when he's about to flirt with someone. Brandon knows none of this. Erika's greatest enemy: Brandon's obliviousness. Her friends constantly tell her: “Just tell him!” Erika: “I can't!” Friend: “Why?” Erika: “Because he's Brandon!” THE ERIKA COMEDY Brandon: “Do you think Erika likes anybody?” Erika, sitting three feet away: “...” Her friend: “She likes someone.” Brandon: “Who?” Erika: “An idiot.” Brandon: “Oh.” Erika: “A REALLY BIG idiot.” Brandon: “Sounds like a problem.” Erika: “YOU ARE THE PROBLEM!” Brandon: “Why are you yelling?” THE FRESHMAN TEAM JAYDEN REYES Position: Quarterback Talented but insecure. He initially struggles with Brandon because he thinks the freshman captain is trying to take control of the team. Eventually, the two become Brandon's primary football partnership. Jayden learns: “A quarterback doesn't have to do everything himself.” MARCUS “MARC” THOMAS Position: Offensive Line Big. Strong. Quiet. He struggles academically. His grades are so bad that he's in danger of being removed from the team. Brandon begins tutoring him. Their study sessions become comedy scenes. Brandon: “What's the answer?” Marc: “Football.” Brandon: “This is algebra.” Marc: “Football algebra.” TYLER KIM Position: Safety Fast, intelligent and extremely nervous. He's terrified of making mistakes. Brandon helps him understand: “You don't have to be perfect. You just have to recover faster than everybody else.” Tyler becomes one of the team's best defenders. DANTE WILLIAMS Position: Running Back Dante is extremely competitive. He initially hates Brandon because Brandon receives snaps at halfback. Their rivalry eventually becomes one of the team's greatest strengths. NOAH MARTINEZ Position: Offensive/Defensive Utility Noah is the team clown. He constantly makes jokes. Unfortunately, his jokes occasionally get him into trouble. Brandon frequently has to rescue him. COACH RICHARD HAYES The freshman head coach. Calm. Strict. Observant. He recognizes Brandon's intelligence immediately. But Coach Hayes refuses to let Brandon become a one-man team. His philosophy: “A great player wins games.” “A great captain builds players.” That becomes Brandon's central lesson. THE CHEERLEADERS The cheerleading squad becomes a recurring source of comedy. They tease Brandon. Flirt with him. Cheer for him. And occasionally distract him. Brandon enjoys the attention. Alan hates it. Alan: “You're supposed to be watching film.” Brandon: “I am.” Alan: “You're watching cheerleading practice.” Brandon: “Special teams.” Alan: “That's not what special teams means.” MANGA FORMAT The manga adaptation would expand each anime episode into approximately 2–3 chapters, allowing more room for Brandon's school life and character relationships. ARC 3 — SCHOOL DAYS Chapters 11–16 Academics, bullying, friendships, Valerie, Erika and Brandon's growing popularity. ARC 4 — THE FOOTBALL WAR Chapters 17–24 Rivalries, losses, injuries, strategy and Brandon's evolution as a leader. ARC 5 — PLAYOFFS Chapters 25–31 The Panthers enter the postseason. THE CENTRAL THEME The entire Manga revolves around one idea: “Talent gets you noticed. Character makes people follow you.” At the beginning, Brandon thinks being the smartest and most talented player makes him a leader. By the end, he understands something different. A captain doesn't have to be the best player. A captain has to make everyone around him better. That's what transforms Brandon from a talented freshman into the heart of the Rosemead Panthers.
