Robert Kessler is pulled back into the case that broke him when a fourth woman turns up dead with the same impossible wounds. By the end of the night at the county morgue, he's certain of one thing: this was never a serial killer.

A fifth victim breaks the pattern — wounds too deep for any bite, no footprints in the rain, and claw marks gouged into concrete. Robert and Marcus don't notice they're being watched.

In the hospital basement, medical examiner Alex delivers findings that shatter the case: the saliva in the wounds isn't human. Then, in front of both detectives, new claw marks appear on the body that weren't there minutes earlier.

Alex's tests reveal active, learning neural tissue in the wounds — adapting faster with each victim. Then Linda Carter's corpse starts moving on its own, and Robert draws his weapon on a body that just deliberately signaled at them.

Riverdale Hospital's night shift ends in silence. An armed tactical team storms the lobby, executes the receptionist, and secures the building floor by floor. Their commander gives one final order: find Robert, and bring him back alive.
